FR901381 is a novel antifungal agent that belongs to the class of echinocandins. It is active against a wide range of fungi, including Candida albicans and Candida glabrata, as well as Aspergillus fumigatus. This drug has been shown to be effective in vitro against mammalian cells and in vivo in mice. FR901381 is structurally related to echinocandin B but with a different side chain. The chemical diversity of FR901381 is under investigation for its potential use in treating infectious diseases caused by bacteria and fungi.
FR901381 has been shown to exhibit potent antifungal activity against clinical isolates of Candida albicans and Candida glabrata, including fluconazole-resistant strains, and also against Aspergillus fumigatus. In addition, FR901381 has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacterial strains such as Escherichia coli
