Fesoterodine is a prodrug that is converted to tolterodine in the body. It has been shown to be effective for the treatment of overactive bladder and urinary incontinence. Fesoterodine has a matrix effect on the urinary tract and inhibits urine flow by binding to muscarinic receptors in the bladder wall, which causes contraction of the detrusor muscle, resulting in an increase in bladder volume. Fesoterodine has also been shown to have a statistically significant effect on reducing symptoms of overactive bladder when used as a combination therapy with other drugs, like oxybutynin or darifenacin. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that fesoterodine was more effective than placebo at controlling disease activity in patients with overactive bladders.
Fumarate (a metabolite) can be detected by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).
