(6R)-6-Fluoroshikimic acid is a synthetic, enantiopure antimicrobial agent that inhibits microbial growth by inhibiting the shikimate pathway. The active form of (6R)-6-fluoroshikimic acid binds to the enzyme dihydroxylase, which converts shikimic acid into 3-deoxybenzoic acid and then into 3-dehydroquinate. This compound also inhibits the synthesis of aromatic amino acids by competing with phenylalanine for access to the enzyme phenylalanine hydroxylase. The inhibition of this enzyme leads to a decrease in the production of dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. (6R)-6-Fluoroshikimic acid has shown activity against a variety of bacteria including Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli. It has also been shown to inhibit Candida albicans yeast growth in culture.
