Fluorescein-5-thiosemicarbazide is a carbonyl group that reacts with thiols, such as glutathione. It has been shown to be an effective probe for the detection of autophagy in cells and tissues. Fluorescein-5-thiosemicarbazide also has immunomodulatory effects and can be used to detect monoclonal antibodies by fluorescence microscopy. It has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties due to its inhibition of toll-like receptors. This compound is used in models of Parkinson's disease and diabetes because it inhibits the uptake of glucose into cells.
