Finasteride is a 5α-reductase inhibitor. It is used in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia and male pattern hair loss. Finasteride has been shown to inhibit the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) by inhibiting the enzyme 5α-reductase, which converts testosterone to DHT. The drug is metabolized in the liver and excreted in human urine. Human bile contains metabolites that are glucuronidated and distal. Liquid chromatography with electrospray ionization mass spectrometry analysis has been used to identify these metabolites as 2-(2-methylpropanol)amide and methyl 3-(3-oxo-4-azaandrostane-17β)-2-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-1-propanoate.
