Epibatidine is a ligand that binds to the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor and activates it. Epibatidine has been shown to be an agonist for the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, which is found in the neuromuscular junction. This drug also has a high affinity for the alpha-2 adrenergic receptor and histamine H-receptor. It can be used as a fluorescent probe to label ligands that bind these receptors in tissue sections or as a radioligand for binding studies on brain membranes. The drug is conjugated with carbamylcholine or nicotine to form derivatives that are useful in labeling tissues or nerve cells.
