4-Fluoro-1-naphthaldehyde is a chemical compound that is used in the preparation of polymers. It binds to nucleophiles and has been shown to be a competitive inhibitor of the enzyme formyl transferase, which transfers a formyl group from coenzyme A to an acceptor molecule. This binding prevents the formation of an enzyme-inhibitor complex with the acceptor molecule, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. The 4-fluoro-1-naphthaldehyde has been shown to have a constant, strain and stepwise kinetic pattern, with an activation energy of 58 kcal/mol. Uv irradiation can cause the release of chlorine atoms from 4-fluoro-1-naphthaldehyde monochloride (4FNACl). These chlorine atoms can react with other compounds to form chlorinated hydrocarbons such as trichloroethylene (C2HCl3) or tetrachloroethyl
