Flupentixol is a synthetic antipsychotic drug that is used to treat schizophrenia, depression and other psychiatric disorders. It is an atypical antipsychotic that has high affinity for dopamine D2 receptors in the brain and thus can be used to treat the symptoms of Parkinson's disease. Flupentixol is chemically related to erythromycin and piperazine. The chemical name for this compound is trans-(E)-flupentixol dihydrochloride. Flupentixol undergoes alkali hydrolysis in water and chloride hydrolysis in alcohol, forming fluvoxamine maleate as a by-product. The formation rate of flupentixol from its precursor, chloropentixol, was determined by chromatographic method. The substance acts through the central nervous system by inhibiting dopamine uptake in nerve cells, leading to increased levels of dopamine in the brain which has an antidepressant effect.
