5-Formylthenoic acid is a small molecule that has been shown to have an affinity for the oxygen-binding site of cytochrome P450. It is a hydrophobic, cyclic molecule that can be synthesized by reacting benzaldehyde and formaldehyde in the presence of base. 5-Formylthenoic acid has shown efficacy against cancer cells in vitro and in vivo, with no toxicity to healthy cells. The mechanism of action is not known, but it may be due to the inhibition of cellular respiration or alteration of cellular metabolic pathways. This compound has been shown to act as a photosensitizer for solar cells with efficiencies up to 2%.
