Filgrastim is a recombinant protein that acts as a colony-stimulating factor. It promotes the growth of stem cells in bone marrow, which are responsible for producing white and red blood cells. Filgrastim is used in patients with AIDS and other immunodeficiency disorders to stimulate the production of white blood cells. It is also used to treat cancer and other conditions where the body does not produce enough neutrophils (a type of white blood cell). Filgrastim is administered by injection, usually once per day or every other day. The most common side effects are fever, chills, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, pain at the injection site, or rash.
