Ferrocenemethanol is a ferrocene derivative that has been used as an electrode coating material. It is a potent inhibitor of DNA polymerase and RNA polymerase with IC50 values of 1.2 and 2.6μM, respectively. Ferrocenemethanol also inhibits the transfer reactions in DNA replication by binding to the enzyme DNA polymerase, thereby preventing the addition of nucleotides to the newly synthesized strand. This inhibition causes a halt in the replication process. Ferrocenemethanol has been shown to be effective against human serum samples, which may be due to its ability to inhibit protein synthesis and cell division, and prevent the synthesis of proteins vital for cell division such as B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2).
