The compound (4-fluorophenyl) acetic acid ethyl ester is an organic chemical that is used as a reagent in organic synthesis and as a building block for other compounds. It can be synthesized by the electrolysis of hydroquinone with pyridine and 5-chloroisatin. The product is then treated with elemental chlorine to produce the desired compound. In the final step, piperidine is reacted with 4-fluorobenzaldehyde to produce the desired product. The chemical structures of this compound are square planar, which means that it has two equivalent substituents in each corner of the molecule. The formaldehyde produced during the reaction may be removed by distillation or by further reaction with sodium hydroxide. Elemental analysis show that this compound consists of 63% carbon, 29% hydrogen, and 8% fluorine.
