Fmoc-Lys(TFA)-OH is a form of oxytocin that is synthesized by solid-phase synthesis. It is an analogue of the natural hormone, oxytocin, which has been shown to be effective for the treatment of dysmenorrhea. Oxytocin is a peptide hormone that causes uterine contractions and milk let-down in nursing mothers. Fmoc-Lys(TFA)-OH may act as a tocolytic agent by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis, thereby causing relaxation of smooth muscle cells in the uterus. The substituents on this molecule are not limited to arginine residues; other forms of substitution can be used such as phosphorothioates or formulae with more than one amino acid.
