2-(2-Formylaminothiazol-4-yl) acetic acid (2FA) is a formylating agent that can be used as an antibacterial agent. It reacts with thiols, including those found in the cell wall of bacteria, to form a reactive intermediate which causes the death of the bacteria. 2FA has been shown to have antibacterial activity against bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis. The reactivity of 2FA is increased by formic acid and acetonitrile due to its nucleophilicity.
