Fluorescent brightener 185 is a fluorescent compound. It can be detected by an analytical method called multiple-reaction monitoring (MRM). MRM is a technique that uses ultraviolet, visible, or mass spectrometry to monitor the presence of two or more substances in a liquid sample. Fluorescent brightener 185 has been shown to have antimicrobial properties. This compound is able to kill lepidoptera larvae and some bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. It also has the ability to inhibit the growth of some fungi.
