5-Fluorobenzo[b]thiophene is a 5-HT receptor agonist that has been shown to have affinity for the 5-HT1A receptor. It is an inorganic compound that has been shown to produce antidepressant effects in animal studies at nanomolar concentrations. It binds to the serotonin transporter, blocking the reuptake of serotonin and prolonging its effects on cells. This drug also has a sulfide group, which may contribute to its binding activity. There are two isomers of this compound: (S)-5-fluorobenzo[b]thiophene and (R)-5-fluorobenzo[b]thiophene. The (S) isomer is more potent than the (R) isomer, but both bind to the 5-HT1A receptor with similar affinity.
