Fmoc-L-prolinol is an amino acid that is used for chemical synthesis. It is a proline derivative, with the amino group being attached to the α carbon. The Fmoc protecting group is used in the synthesis of peptides and proteins to protect the side chain from unwanted reactions. In order to synthesize this amino acid, sodium borohydride must be used as a reducing agent. This reaction will produce a racemic mixture of Fmoc-L-prolinol and L-prolinol. To avoid this, sodium hydroxide can be added to hydrolyze one of the esters formed in the reaction to give only one enantiomer. This process is efficient and produces high yields. Alcohols are not required for this synthesis.
