Fmoc-4-iodo-D-phenylalanine is a non-natural amino acid that has been modified to increase the specificity for the active site of mycobacterial enzymes. This modification can be used to design novel strategies for the treatment of tuberculosis. Fmoc-4-iodo-D-phenylalanine has shown cellular uptake and irreversible inactivation in mycobacteria. It is also possible to use this modified amino acid as a probe for measuring the glutathione concentration in cells. The lc-ms analysis of Fmoc-4-iodo-D phenylalanine uptake revealed that millimolar concentrations were required before cell death was observed.
