Fmoc-L-cyclopentylglycine is an asymmetric synthesis catalyst that allows the construction of a cyclopentyl ring system. It is synthesized by alkylating a glycine with cyclopentyl bromide, catalytic hydrogenolysis, and high yield. The stereoselectivity of this reaction can be controlled to produce either a syn or anti product. Fmoc-L-cyclopentylglycine has been used in efficient diastereoselective hydrogenolysis of benzyl ethers. The Fmoc group is removed by strong acid (e.g., fmoc-osu) in order to avoid racemization.
