Fromyl-L-Valine is a synthetic amino acid that has been synthesized by the asymmetric synthesis of gramicidin. It contains a carbonyl group and an alkylthio group. Fromyl-L-Valine is an amino acid with the structural formula CHNO and is also known as Valine-2,4,5-triol. The racemase enzyme converts the L-isomer to D-isomer. Fromyl-L-Valine has been found to be hydrolyzed by hydrochloric acid in acidic solution and can be identified by chromatographic methods. This compound is used as a precursor for formyltetrahydrofolic acid, which is a precursor for tetrahydrofolate, which plays a role in one carbon metabolism.
