Fmoc-4-methoxybenzyl selenocysteine is a disulfide residue that is used in the solid-phase peptide synthesis. It is synthesized by reacting an activated ester, such as Fmoc-protected amino acid, with selenocystine. This may be accomplished by using a coupling agent, such as 1-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-3-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC), to react with the carboxylic acid of the Fmoc-protected amino acid and the sulfhydryl group of selenocystine. The first step in this reaction is deprotection of the FMOC protecting group through treatment with trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) and anisole. This product has been shown to have antiinflammatory activities.
