Fmoc-3-iodo-D-tyrosine is a metastatic agent that has affinity for the hepatobiliary system. It can be immobilized on a surface and used for the uptake of radiolabeled 3I-labeled substances. The uptake of these substances in tumors or other tissues is monitored by measuring the amount of radioactive material that is excreted in the urine or feces. Fmoc-3-iodo-D-tyrosine may also be used to monitor tumor growth and response to treatment with chemotherapy.
Fmoc-3-iodo-D-tyrosine is injected into a patient, where it binds to bone tissue, which then allows radioiodinated molecules to bind to it as well. The noninvasive technique of monitoring tumor uptake using Fmoc-3 iodinated tyrosine can be useful in determining the progress of osteosarcoma patients after surgery.
