5-Fluoronicotinic acid is a lipoprotein lipase inhibitor that belongs to the class of statin drugs. It has been shown to inhibit the enzyme that catalyzes the production of fatty acids from triglycerides, leading to decreased levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in blood plasma. The long-term effects of 5-fluoronicotinic acid have been studied in rats, with a prolonged treatment period (90 days) resulting in a decrease in plaque formation and cholesterol levels. This drug also inhibits adenyl cyclase, which is involved in the conversion of ATP into cyclic AMP. Hyperpolarisation experiments have revealed that 5-fluoronicotinic acid binds to chloride ions and picolinic acid, which may contribute to its lipid lowering properties.
