4-Fluorophenylacetaldehyde is an agrochemical that can be applied to crops as a fungicide and bactericide. It has been shown to be effective against aerobic bacteria such as E. coli K-12, both in the presence and absence of oxygen. 4-Fluorophenylacetaldehyde inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the enzyme acetaldehyde dehydrogenase, which catalyzes the oxidation of acetaldehyde to acetic acid. This prevents the conversion of acetaldehyde into acetic acid, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. 4-Fluorophenylacetaldehyde also has a phenolic moiety, which can act as an electron acceptor in oxidative reactions with other molecules. Its analogues include styrene and 1,4-dioxane, which are used for the production of polystyrene plastics and solvents.
