3-Fluoro-4-nitrotoluene is a chemical that belongs to the class of nitro compounds. It is used as an intermediate for the synthesis of beta-cyclodextrin, which is a cyclic oligosaccharide that has been found to be effective in inhibiting influenza virus. 3-Fluoro-4-nitrotoluene can be produced through the reaction of formaldehyde with sodium nitrate and hydrofluoric acid in a liquid phase. This reaction takes place at room temperature and produces a yield of about 50%. The production of this compound is also efficient and inexpensive.
