It is used in the analytical method for measuring protein synthesis, which is based on the incorporation of fluorescein-6-iodoacetamide into proteins by enzymatic hydrolysis. Fluorescein-6-iodoacetamide has also been used as a marker for cellular metabolism and energy production. This compound reacts with disulfide bonds to form fluorescent products, which can be detected using low light and fluorescence spectroscopy.
