Description

5-Fluoro-2-hydroxypyridine is an optically active chiral sulfonamide that is used as a receptor antagonist. It is a lactam with a sulfonic acid group at the 2 position and has been shown to inhibit transamination reactions catalyzed by enantioselective enzymes. 5-Fluoro-2-hydroxypyridine has been optimized for biocatalytic and clinical trials and has shown potential for the treatment of Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and other neurological disorders. 5-Fluoro-2-hydroxypyridine can be synthesized from an acid salt or by salt formation with an appropriate base. The synthesis of 5-fluoropyridine is accomplished via the oxidation of hydrazine.
