1-Formyl-beta-carboline is an antiviral agent that has been shown to inhibit the replication of several viruses in cell culture. It is not toxic in animal studies and has low toxicity for humans. 1-Formyl-beta-carboline inhibits the production of viral proteins by inhibiting protein synthesis at the ribosome. The mechanism of action is not yet fully understood, but it is believed that 1-Formyl-beta-carboline binds to a site on the virus genome, preventing transcription and translation. A research study found that 1-Formyl-beta-carboline inhibited different genotypes of HIV with differing degrees of efficiency. This drug may be useful as a treatment for HIV patients who are resistant to other antiviral drugs because it can inhibit multiple genotypes of the virus.
