5-Fluoroindole-2-carboxylic acid methyl ester (5FCM) is a potent and selective diabetogenic agent that is currently under development for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. 5FCM binds to the active site of pancreatic α-amylase, inhibiting its function and reducing blood glucose levels. It has been shown to have a good safety profile in animal studies. The kinetic parameters for 5FCM are determined by measuring the effect of this drug on pancreatic α-amylase activity. These parameters include the inhibition constant KI, which is an indicator for potency, and the inhibition rate constant kI, which determines how quickly 5FCM inhibits pancreatic α-amylase activity. The interaction between 5FCM and pancreatic α-amylase has been studied using molecular modeling techniques.
