5-Fluoro-2-nitrobenzaldehyde (5F2NA) is a reactive compound that has been shown to inhibit the growth of human cancer cells. 5F2NA inhibits tumorigenesis by inducing apoptosis and autophagy in cancer cells. It also can induce cell cycle arrest, inhibiting the synthesis of proteins required for cell division. 5F2NA also inhibits mitochondrial membrane potential, which may be its most potent anticancer activity. The mechanism of action for 5F2NA is unsymmetrical dimerization with nucleophiles such as NADH or flavin mononucleotide (FMN). This reaction leads to an allosteric change in the enzyme’s shape, which inhibits the enzyme’s activity.
