Flavan is a natural compound found in plants. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of a variety of bacteria and fungi, including some that are resistant to antibiotics. Flavan is also used in the prevention and treatment of metabolic disorders, such as diabetes, by inhibiting the synthesis of fatty acids and cholesterol in liver cells. This compound has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties that may be due to its ability to inhibit lipoxygenase activity. In vitro assays have shown that flavan inhibits mitochondrial membrane potential. The hydroxyl group on this molecule is also reactive with oxygen nucleophiles, leading it to react with tryptophan and produce fluorescence.
