1-(3-Fluorophenyl)ethanol is a catalytic reagent that converts alcohols to aldehydes and ketones. It is used in the homologation of secondary alcohols to tertiary alcohols, as well as in the synthesis of styrenes. 1-(3-Fluorophenyl)ethanol is also used for the enantioselective reduction of esters, such as catecholborane, which produces pinanediol with high selectivity. This product has been shown to be effective at reducing steric hindrance, giving it potential use in the synthesis of pinanediol with fluorinated substituents.
