Fluorodopan is a newly synthesized, non-steroidal compound that has been shown to have neuroprotective properties. It is a fatty acid derivative and binds to the glutamate receptor in mouse hippocampal neurons. Fluorodopan inhibits the growth of cancer cells by inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-6 and TNF-α. This drug also inhibits the growth of bladder cancer cells (urothelial) by preventing cell proliferation and inducing apoptosis. Fluorodopan blocks the release of histamine from mast cells and prevents epidermal growth factor from binding to its receptor on fibroblasts. The neuroprotective effects of this drug are due to its ability to stimulate neurotrophic factors such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and nerve growth factor (NGF).
