Product Information
- Monofluoroacetate anion
- Fluoroacetate anion
- Acetic acid, fluoro-, ion(1-)
Fluoroacetate is a fluorinated form of acetate that has been shown to be highly toxic to cells. It is used in analytical chemistry as a reagent for the determination of malonic acid, trifluoroacetic acid and other carboxylic acids. The toxicity of fluoroacetate may be due to its ability to inhibit cellular energy metabolism by inhibiting the oxidation of glucose. Fluoroacetate also reacts with glutamate, which leads to an accumulation of ammonia and a depletion of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). This chemical also inhibits bacterial translocation by preventing the passage of bacteria through the gut wall into the bloodstream.
