It reacts with ammonium hydroxide in a hydantoin reaction to form an alkylating agent. 4-Fluoro-L-lysine can also be used as a reagent for the synthesis of halogenated hydrocarbons, such as fluoroalkanes and chloroalkanes. The electrophilic nature of this molecule makes it useful for the introduction of fluorine groups into other organic compounds.
