Fluoropyridoxal is an intermediate in the metabolism of tryptophan, which is converted to 6-fluoropyridoxal phosphate. It has been used as a model system for studying the kinetics and mechanism of reaction of carboxylates with phosphites. Fluoropyridoxal reacts with phosphite to form two tautomers: one predominately in the cytosol and one predominately in the mitochondria. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy has been used to study fluoropyridoxal derivatives that are fluorescent, including 6-fluoropyridoxal phosphate. The synthesis of a polymer conjugate containing fluorine was also studied using fluoropyridoxal as a precursor.
