6-Fluorometaraminol (6-FMA) is a halogenated analog of the amino acid arginine. It has been shown to have cardioprotective effects and to reduce infarct size in animal models of ischemia/reperfusion injury. 6-FMA is used as an experimental drug for the treatment of congestive heart failure, and has also been shown to increase neuronal function in tissue samples. 6-FMA binds stereospecifically to cardiac tissue, where it acts as a substrate for organometallic coupling reactions. This compound was found to be rapidly metabolized in vivo, with positron emission tomography showing uptake mainly in the heart and liver.
