2-Fluoro-3-Nitroaniline is a nitro compound that is used in the preparation of glyoxal, an important intermediate in the production of polymers. 2-Fluoro-3-nitroaniline is usually prepared by reacting 5-bromo-2-fluoroaniline with nitrophenyl piperazine and hydrogen. The reaction yields two isomers, one with a chloride and the other a sulfonate group. The chloride form can be converted to the sulfonate form by treatment with sulfuric acid or hydrogenolysis, which results in the loss of hydrogen chloride. This conversion also changes the color from red to yellow.
