3-Fluorobenzo(a,i)pyrene is a hydrocarbon that is classified as a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon. It has been shown to be carcinogenic in laboratory rats and mice. 3-Fluorobenzo(a,i)pyrene has been tested for carcinogenic activity using the Ames test and the mouse micronucleus assay. The carcinogenic activity of this compound has also been studied through the use of nmr analysis, which can reveal active sites and metabolic pathways. The sequence of 3-fluorobenzo(a,i)pyrene is hexacyclic with a condensed ring system. This compound has two aromatic groups that are attached to the benzene ring on either side of the pyrene group. When metabolized, 3-fluorobenzo(a,i)pyrene forms benzo[a]pyrene diol epoxide as an active metabolite.
