1-Fluoro-1,1-dinitroethane is a compound that reacts with fluorine to produce the insensitive compound methylene. It reacts with chloride to form the homologous compounds potassium chloride and difluoride. Reaction products of 1-fluoro-1,1-dinitroethane are liquid at room temperature and do not require desensitizing agents. The yields of 1-fluoro-1,1-dinitroethane are not affected by the presence of potassium salts. The reaction can be performed in liquids such as benzene or chloroform.
