Alpha-fluoromethylhistidine is a histamine inhibitor that inhibits the enzyme histidine decarboxylase, which converts histidine to histamine. This inhibitor is irreversible and can be used to measure the activity of this enzyme. Alpha-fluoromethylhistidine has been shown to be an effective antagonist against mouse monoclonal antibody, inhibiting its binding to cells in culture. It also inhibits the production of brain neurotransmitters such as dopamine and norepinephrine, which may be due to its ability to inhibit hypothalamic neurons that produce these chemicals. Alpha-fluoromethylhistidine has been shown to increase locomotor activity in mice by stimulating central nervous system functions via the release of acetylcholine and noradrenaline from their storage sites in nerve endings.
