- Benzo(c)phenanthrene, 6-fluoro-
7-Fluorobenzo[c]phenanthrene is a synthetic epoxide that has been shown to be tumorigenic in mice. It has been found to be an enantiomer of 3-methylcholanthrene and is hydrated in vivo. 7-Fluorobenzo[c]phenanthrene can be synthesized by the regiospecific addition of fluorine to 2,3-epoxypropene with bromination as an intermediate step. This compound is metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes into a variety of metabolites. The carcinogenic potential of this compound has not been determined, but its ability to enhance the activity of other carcinogens may contribute to its carcinogenic effects.
