8-Fluoro-8-demethylriboflavin (8FDMB) is a flavin cofactor that is used in the synthesis of riboflavin. 8FDMB has a constant absorption at 360 nm and can be identified by the presence of an intense peak near 3.4 ppm in its 1H NMR spectrum. 8FDMB can be synthesized from anthranilate with the help of a dehydrogenase enzyme, which converts it to 8-fluoro-8-demethylanthranilate. This conversion is irreversible and requires NADPH as a cofactor. The reaction product is then converted to 8FDMB by hydroxylase enzymes, which are also required for this reaction to take place. The chromophore of 8FDMB is hydroxymethyl group on C5, which absorbs light maximally at 420 nm.
