It is synthesized by refluxing paraformaldehyde and dimethylamine, followed by evaporation of solvents and condensation with cyanide. The product can be purified by recrystallization from ethanol. The reaction yield for this synthesis is about 30%. 6-Fluoroindole-3-acetonitrile has been used as a reagent to extract compounds such as 6-fluorogramine from coal tar or coal gas.
