The compound has been found to be an acidic metallacycle in the presence of base and also undergoes chromatographic separation into its two isomers. 2-Fluorodibenzo[b,d]thiophene can be quantified by spectrometry and purified by recrystallization. It is used as a precursor for other organic compounds such as carboxylic acids.
2-Fluorodibenzo[b,d]thiophene is not selective in nature; it reacts with nucleophiles such as amines and alcohols to form conjugated systems.
