3-Acetylpyridine is a metabolite of 5-fluoro-3-pyridinecarboxamide. The compound has been shown to have effects on the heart and blood vessels, in addition to its role as an intermediate in the synthesis of nicotinamide. 3-acetylpyridine can be synthesized by reacting sodium hydroxide with pyrrolase, aminotransferase, or hydrocortisone. The conversion of 3-acetylpyridine into nicotinamide is catalyzed by nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) deaminases. When given orally, it has been found to lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels in animals. It also inhibits the production of cortisol and testosterone, which may be due to its ability to inhibit enzymes that are involved in hormone synthesis.
