It is a byproduct of the fermentation process and can be found in soil, water, and air. 4-Fluorobutyric Acid Sodium Salt is also produced as a byproduct during the preparation of metronidazole. It is antifouling and has been used for sterilization and as an antimicrobial agent against contaminants such as vancomycin.
