2-Fluoro-5-methoxybenzenemethanol is a benzyl compound with the chemical formula C8H8FO2. It is an alkylated, fluorinated benzenemethanol derivative. This compound was synthesized by the enolate reaction of 2-fluoro-5-methoxybenzaldehyde with glycine and l-tyrosine. The hydrolysis of the ester group in this molecule leads to propanoic acid and propanoic, which are both organic acids. The asymmetric synthesis of this compound led to its enantiomers, one (S)-enantiomer and one (R)-enantiomer. The S-(+)-enantiomer has been shown to be more potent than the R-(-) enantiomer in inhibiting bacterial growth.
