5-(Fluoromethyl)-3,4-piperidinediol is a prodrug that is converted to its active form, 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA), in the body. DOPA is synthesized from 5-(fluoromethyl)-3,4-piperidinediol by the enzyme lysosomal acid alpha-glucosidase. It has been shown to be effective in the treatment of degenerative disorders such as Gaucher's disease and Parkinson's disease.
