1-Fluoro-4-(2-isocyanatoethyl)benzene is a macrocyclic compound that is used as a prodrug for the treatment of tuberculosis. It can be activated by ethylene, which forms an ethylenoxime functional group. This active form binds to the cobalamin cofactor in bacterial cell wall synthesis, thereby inhibiting bacterial growth. 1-Fluoro-4-(2-isocyanatoethyl)benzene has been shown to have antibacterial activity against mammalian cells in vitro and liposomal formulations in vivo. The compound is also fluorescent and can be detected using advances in fluorescence technology such as flow cytometry.
